How to Delete a Board on Pinterest (Desktop & Mobile)
Deleting a Pinterest board removes it completely from your profile along with all pins on it. Before you delete, make sure you understand the difference between archiving (temporary) and deleting (permanent).
Quick Facts
⚠️ Critical Info: According to Pinterest's official Help Center:
- Deleting a board deletes all pins on that board
- You have 7 days to restore deleted boards (see our recovery guide)
- After 7 days, deletion is permanent
- You cannot delete group boards you don't own (but you can leave them)
How to Delete a Board (Desktop)
- Log in to pinterest.com
- Click your profile picture (top right) to open your profile
- Click the board you want to delete
- Click three dots (...) next to the board name
- Select Edit board
- Click Delete (bottom left corner)
- Click Delete forever to confirm
The board and all its pins are now deleted.
How to Delete a Board (Mobile)
iOS:
- Open Pinterest app
- Tap your profile picture (bottom right)
- Tap Boards (or Saved for business accounts)
- Tap the board you want to delete
- Tap three dots (...) (top right)
- Select Edit board
- Scroll down and tap Delete board
- Tap Delete forever to confirm
Android:
Same steps as iOS, but final confirmation says Delete (not "Delete forever")
Archive vs. Delete: Which Should You Use?
| Action | Archive | Delete |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Hidden from public profile | Completely removed |
| Pins preserved? | Yes, all pins kept | No, all pins deleted |
| Reversible? | Yes, instantly anytime | 7 days only |
| Board URL | Still works | Becomes dead link |
| Collaborators | Keep access | Lose access |
| Use when | Temporarily hiding | Permanently removing |
Recommendation: Use Archive if you're unsure. You can always delete later, but you can't un-delete after 7 days.
How to Archive a Board Instead
If you just want to hide a board temporarily:
Desktop:
- Open the board → Three dots (...) → Archive
- Confirm by clicking Archive again
Mobile:
- Open board → Three dots (...) → Archive board
- Tap Archive to confirm
To find archived boards later:
- Go to profile → Saved/Boards tab → Scroll to "Archived boards" section
To unarchive: Open archived board → Three dots (...) → Unarchive
What Happens When You Delete a Board
Immediately:
- Board disappears from your profile
- All pins on the board are deleted
- Collaborators lose access (if group board)
- Board URL becomes inactive
Within 7 days:
- Board stored in "Recently deleted" section
- Can be restored (desktop/Android only)
- Not visible to anyone
After 7 days:
- Permanently deleted from Pinterest servers
- Cannot be recovered by anyone, including Pinterest Support
- All pins, comments, and engagement lost forever
Important: Other people's repins of your pins remain on their boards - they just lose the link back to your original board.
Special Cases
Group Boards
If you're the owner:
- You can delete the board (affects everyone)
- All collaborators lose access
- Consider removing collaborators individually instead
If you're a collaborator:
- You cannot delete the board
- You can only leave the board
- To leave: Open board → Three dots (...) → Leave board
Secret Boards
Deleted the same way as public boards. Same 7-day recovery window applies.
Board Sections
You cannot delete individual board sections separately. Sections are deleted when you delete the entire board. To remove pins from a section, move them to another section or board first.
Before You Delete: Consider These Alternatives
1. Make Board Secret
- Hides board from public without deleting
- Board → Edit board → Toggle "Keep this board secret"
- You keep all pins and can make public again later
2. Move Pins to Another Board
- Save valuable pins before deleting board
- Click Organize → Select pins → Move
- Then delete empty board
3. Merge with Another Board
- Combine similar boards to reduce clutter
- Drag one board onto another → "Move Pins and delete board"
- Or manually move all pins, then delete
4. Delete Individual Pins
- Clean up board without deleting it
- See our guide on how to delete Pinterest pins
- For pins you've saved from others, see how to unsave pins on Pinterest
- Removes clutter while keeping board structure
For creating new pins to replace deleted ones, see our guide on how to make a pin on Pinterest.
Board Limits to Know
According to Pinterest's official limits:
- Maximum 2,000 boards per account
- Includes secret boards and group boards you created
- Maximum 200,000 pins across all boards
- No limit on board followers
If you hit the 2,000 board limit, you must delete boards to create new ones.
Common Questions
Can I recover a deleted board after 7 days? No. After 7 days, boards are permanently deleted. Pinterest Support cannot retrieve them. The 7-day window is firm. For detailed recovery steps within that window, see our recovery guide.
What happens to pins when I delete a board? All pins on that board are deleted from your account. However, if other users saved (repinned) your pins to their boards, their copies remain - they just lose the link back to your original pin.
Can I delete multiple boards at once? No. Pinterest doesn't offer bulk board deletion. You must delete boards one by one. Consider archiving multiple boards instead if you want to hide them quickly.
Will deleting a board affect my Pinterest SEO? Yes, potentially. If the board was well-optimized and driving traffic, deleting it removes that SEO value. Pinterest uses board titles and descriptions to understand your account. Deleting boards changes your account's keyword profile. For tips on optimizing your Pinterest strategy, see our Pinterest tips and tricks guide and Pinterest posting strategy.
Can I delete a board but keep the pins? Yes. Before deleting, go to the board → Click Organize → Select all pins → Click Move → Choose destination board. Then delete the empty board. This preserves your pins while removing the board structure.
Why can't I delete a group board? If you didn't create the group board (you're just a collaborator), you can't delete it. Only the board owner can delete group boards. You can leave the board instead: Open board → Three dots (...) → Leave board.
Does archiving a board count toward my 2,000 board limit? Yes. Archived boards still count toward your total board limit. They're just hidden from your public profile. To free up space for new boards, you must delete archived boards (not just archive them).
Can business accounts delete boards differently? No, the deletion process is identical for personal and business accounts. Both have the same 7-day recovery window and use the same deletion steps.
When to Delete vs. When to Keep
Delete if:
- Board is truly irrelevant to your current content
- Contains spam or guideline-violating content
- Duplicate of another board
- Hit the 2,000 board limit and need space
- Certain you'll never need the pins again
Keep/Archive if:
- Board has traffic or engagement
- Might need it later
- Contains valuable pins you haven't reviewed
- Not sure yet - archive first, decide later
- Board is seasonal (archive during off-season)
Pro tip: According to Pinterest best practices, you should never delete boards that are driving traffic. Instead, make them secret or archive them to preserve SEO value while hiding from your profile.
Bottom Line
Deleting a Pinterest board is permanent after 7 days. If you're uncertain, archive the board instead - you can always delete it later, but you can't un-delete. Always move valuable pins to another board before deleting, and remember that deleting affects all collaborators on group boards.
