The Toltecs bred a reddish-brown dog called the Techichi, known for its calm temperament and mystical aura. Techichis were deeply spiritual to the Toltecs and later the Aztecs. They were considered spirit guides, protectors of the soul in the afterlife, and were often buried alongside their owners. Priests even blessed them during sacred temple ceremonies. But the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s changed everything. These foreign invaders destroyed temples, burned sacred scrolls, and nearly wiped out the Techichi. For centuries, the breed was thought to be extinct. That is, until the 1800s—when American explorers stumbled upon small dogs roaming remote Mexican villages. Curious and enchanted, they brought them back to the U.S., unknowingly reintroducing the descendants of the ancient Techichi. By the early 1900s, Chihuahuas appeared in American dog shows.
