What is Synthesia?

Synthesia is the leading enterprise AI video platform, used by 50,000+ companies including Fortune 100 organizations. Users type a script, pick from 240+ AI avatars, and generate a professional video with lip-synced speech in 160+ languages. The platform is purpose-built for corporate use cases: L&D training, onboarding, compliance, internal comms, and knowledge management. Key features include personal avatar clones, voice cloning, AI dubbing in 32 languages with lip sync, interactive video elements (quizzes, branching), SCORM/xAPI export for LMS integration, Brand Kits, and live collaboration. Their Synthesia 3.0 launch (October 2025) introduced Express-2 avatars with full-body gestures. Pricing starts free (10 min, watermarked) with paid plans from $29/mo (Starter, 10 min) to $89/mo (Creator, 30 min). Enterprise features like SCORM, SSO, Brand Kit, and 1-click translation are locked behind custom Enterprise pricing. Custom Studio Avatars cost ~$1,000/year extra. Valued at $4B+.

Synthesia Limitations

Enterprise-focused - essential features (SCORM, SSO, Brand Kit, live collaboration, 1-click translation) locked behind custom Enterprise pricing
Avatar realism breaks down in longer videos - robotic eye movements, unnatural pauses, repetitive gestures after ~90 seconds
Content moderation is opaque and inconsistent - videos get flagged without clear explanation, especially medical/scientific content
Strict minute caps on lower tiers: Starter gets only 10 min/month, Creator gets 30 min/month
Custom Studio Avatars cost ~$1,000/year on top of plan costs
No social media publishing or scheduling to any platform
No organic content analytics or competitor tracking
No slideshow creation or content automation campaigns
No hosted accounts or posting infrastructure
AI voices can sound mechanical and lack natural emotional nuance
Rendering can be slow - some users report hours for short scripts
Refund difficulties reported by multiple Trustpilot reviewers
No batch/bulk video processing - each video must be manually created
Limited creative flexibility - intentionally simple editor restricts timeline control and transitions

What Users Say About Synthesia

4.3/5on Trustpilot (300 reviews)

I signed up for Synthesia's Starter Monthly plan after seeing a 7-day free trial advertised. I requested a refund well within their 15-day consumer refund period, but they refused to issue it. Their support agent refused to transfer me to a supervisor. I barely used the platform. Their advertised free trial and refund policies do not seem to be honored in practice.

Please do not get Synthesia. The personal avatar is atrocious. I paid $89 for the monthly because all the avatars looked so great. My avatar was shaking and the voice was screechy. They also have weird policies and restrictions. If you get a monthly subscription they do not offer a refund even if you only used it for a few hours. Worst AI avatar generator I tried.

Alison SchneiderTrustpilot · 2025

An absolutely dreadful experience. I spent 6 hours writing a script to provide an explanation video. Our scripts were rejected without any reason given. Customer Service is AI based and when you do get hold of a human they just send copy-paste responses. I went through their appeal process, it was approved, then immediately rejected again. Still no explanation.

Andrew DaviesTrustpilot · 2025

If there would be only one service I could pick for not recommending, that would be Synthesia. I spent 6 hours to create time sensitive content, my video got rejected. My content was educational, it did not have any claim as media agency. The answer I got was upgrade your membership to enterprise account. Terrible waste of time, opportunity and money.

B.ATrustpilot · 2025

This company doesn't issue refunds so think before you spend as unreasonable moderation is disruptive to your work. Moderation is not reliable! Waste of time and money to even pay for this! I paid and within 10 days, it keeps moderating the lessons I was creating!

RTrustpilot · 2025

It could be a good experience, but it's not very user-friendly to try out. I wanted to experiment with video dubbing using a 7:30-minute video. It took about 30 minutes just to get a one-minute demo back. I couldn't even download it. I also couldn't enter comments without paying for a membership. You can't really appreciate it without paying.

Why users switch from Synthesia

Synthesia is the enterprise standard for AI avatar video - 50,000+ companies, SOC 2 certified, SCORM export, 240+ avatars, 160+ languages. For corporate training, onboarding, and compliance videos, it is a strong choice. But Synthesia is not built for social media. There is no content scheduling, no publishing to any platform, no organic analytics, no slideshow creation, and no automation campaigns. The minute caps are strict - Starter gives you only 10 minutes of video per month for $29. Essential collaboration and branding features require custom Enterprise pricing. And the avatar quality, while improving, still feels clinical for social content where authentic, native-looking formats perform best.

Essential features locked behind Enterprise

Key capabilities like custom avatars, API access, and advanced integrations are only available on the Enterprise plan with custom pricing. The $29/mo Starter plan is limited to 10 minutes of video per month.

Corporate training tool, not social content

Synthesia is designed for SCORM-compliant training videos, internal communications, and compliance content. Avatar presentations do not match the authentic, fast-paced style that performs on social platforms.

No social publishing or scheduling

Synthesia has no social media integration. Videos must be rendered, exported, and manually uploaded to each platform. There is no scheduling, no content calendar, and no multi-account management.

Rigid 10-minute limit on Starter

The Starter plan caps video output at 10 minutes per month. For teams producing daily content, this runs out in the first few days, forcing expensive upgrades to Creator ($89/mo) or higher.

Best Synthesia alternative: Genviral

Synthesia is built for enterprise training and corporate communications - SCORM-compatible videos, internal knowledge bases, and polished avatar presenters. It does that well. But if your focus is social media growth, Synthesia has no tools for it: no scheduling, no slideshows, no analytics, no automation.

Genviral is purpose-built for social content. AI Studio gives you avatar and talking-head videos, plus 8+ image models and 5+ video models including Kling 2.6 Pro, WAN 2.5/2.6, Veo 3, and Sora 2. On top of that, you get a slideshow engine with templates, narration, and text overlays, multi-platform scheduling to 6 platforms, analytics that track any TikTok/Instagram/YouTube account, and automation campaigns that generate 5-200 unique slideshows per run.

Synthesia starts at $29/mo for basic features but locks most capabilities behind enterprise pricing. Genviral starts at $29/mo (Creator), $49/mo (Professional), and $99/mo (Business) - with AI generation, scheduling, analytics, hosted accounts on dedicated devices, team workspaces, and a Partner API with 42+ endpoints all included from the start.
